HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women’s soccer team remained unphased after the 22-hour delay to secure a 1-0 victory against UIW Monday morning at Strawberry Stadium.
The Lady Lion defense restricted UIW’s opportunities, as Southeastern held a strong defensive effort to hold the Cardinals scoreless for the entire match. SLU goalkeeper Olivia Griffin rejected two of UIW’s shots on goal.
SLU capitalized off a penalty with a counter-attack to break the scoreless tie and take the lead. Brown shot one through the net off an assist from Hailie Yoder and Rylee Franklin for a 1-0 Southeastern advantage in 78th minute.
Southeastern continued to value each possession in the second half, but could not add to its tally. Four Lady Lions each had narrow misses. A total of 16 Lady Lions saw action in the first home conference game of the season.
SLU will return to action on Friday, continuing its three-game home stretch against Texas A&M-Commerce (4-5-1, 2-0) for a 7 p.m. match on ESPN+. Sept. 29 is also the Alumni game/ Family Weekend where former players will be recognized during halftime. Family and friends of all the players are welcome to Strawberry Stadium to celebrate game one of Parents Weekend.
