00:00:05.120 –> 00:00:07.680
Alright. We’re gonna go.
00:00:07.680 –> 00:00:09.360
Oh, wait. We’re actually starting. Yep.
00:00:09.360 –> 00:00:23.215
Oh, cool. Alright. Hey, everybody. This is Paige LeBlue with your fight like a lion podcast at ninety point nine The Lion. We are excited to have some of our leaders of Fellowship of Christian Athletes in the studio today.
00:00:23.215 –> 00:00:25.535
So you guys wanna go around and introduce yourselves?
00:00:25.535 –> 00:00:29.935
Mhmm. My name is Micah Miller. I’m on the track and field team, and I’m a senior.
00:00:30.750 –> 00:00:34.510
My name is Carly Petty. I’m a senior, and I’m on the beach volleyball team.
00:00:34.670 –> 00:00:38.110
My name is Austin Harper. I’m a junior, and I’m on the track and field team.
00:00:38.190 –> 00:00:40.510
Alright. Y’all welcome in to the studio.
00:00:41.790 –> 00:00:56.365
Excited to have you guys in. I just feel like FCA has started off so strong this year, like fire. Y’all talk to me a little bit about that. What’s different this year and what do you guys have going on?
00:00:58.250 –> 00:01:14.625
I mean, I just feel like it’s it’s just a we’re we’re seeing the fruit now of the labor that we’ve been putting in the last couple years. We’ve we’ve made a transition. We used to be in the Kinesiology Building, and, not many people could see it. So we moved over to the rec, and that’s just been a huge blessing. The room, it’s a much better space.
00:01:15.025 –> 00:01:27.900
It’s really just been the hand of God over, I mean, over the ministry, honestly. We just take the little with what we had, and we just, you know, just got to work, and we’re seeing the fruit of it now, and it’s been beautiful.
00:01:28.620 –> 00:01:39.835
Yeah. Yeah, I love that. When I walked up to the rec the other day, saw where you guys had chalk written on the sidewalk and chalk and everything. I’m like, Okay. They’re like claiming this space, it’s good.
00:01:41.995 –> 00:01:45.595
Carly, what do you see as different this year or maybe what’s different for you?
00:01:46.395 –> 00:02:04.930
So last year, I only went in the spring, so I wouldn’t know as much as Mike has in the transformation, Yeah. But, last year, I was kind of just started going. So I was, like, got the full experience of, like, going for the first time before I was saved, then after I was saved.
00:02:04.930 –> 00:02:05.490
Oh, wow.
00:02:05.490 –> 00:02:05.810
And then,
00:02:07.155 –> 00:02:24.620
into this year now being the leader. So that’s what’s different for me. Would say, like, I get to lead and I got to see how what it was like to not be a leader and, like, what are the needs. So I think it’s easier for me to, like lead now. Oh, that’s awesome.
00:02:24.620 –> 00:02:28.220
That’s a great story. Yeah. That’s really beautiful.
00:02:28.220 –> 00:02:28.620
Awesome.
00:02:28.860 –> 00:02:52.190
I think I would say it’s really amazing to see like the consistency. I feel like last year, it was a lot of like us leaders now. Like, it was just mainly us coming in like maybe a couple teammates we invited but now like like last year, Ryan Brome was our only baseball player and now, it’s majority like the whole baseball team is coming to FCA and it’s just super consistent and we’re always adding people. So, it’s just like really beautiful to see like the Lord working in that way. Mhmm.
00:02:52.190 –> 00:03:16.895
Yeah. Yeah. I think one of the biggest things is the leaders like stepping up and filling their role and just inviting people and being consistent in that aspect as well. Like you mentioned the consistency of like people coming and there’s just been a consistent push from guys on different sports teams, like, you know, just like putting their hand to the work and inviting people and, like, spreading the word, spreading the gospel.
00:03:17.135 –> 00:03:50.690
I love that. Like I saw I know that I saw Instagram because I follow some of you guys on Instagram and I saw that there were a couple of softball players advertising, I think what were they talking about? Oh, the power of the tongue and they were advertising their like Bible study at their house and I was like, wow, look like so many teams are now involved where there was a time when I would ask, hey, do you know about FCA? Do you go to FCA? And a lot of athletes just were kind of like, they didn’t really even know what was happening, but it’s so full of life now Yeah.
00:03:50.690 –> 00:03:52.610
And it sounds like still growing.
00:03:52.610 –> 00:04:28.820
And there is like a fruit that has come from FCA, like us leaders being able to step up, and then this year we started a girls bible study so that people who are really involved and wanna get closer, it’s not just a Monday night, they can come to the bible study. We do bible study Thursdays at seven. Girls and guys, anyone can come if you’re listening and you wanna come. And so from FCA and making connections, we’re able to invite people to bible study. So people who can’t make FCA or can’t make bible study will or can’t make FCA will come to bible study.
00:04:28.820 –> 00:04:44.925
And so, like, I think, like, half the baseball team is going to the guys bible study. They have, like, 35 people at their bible study, but not everyone can make FCA. So it’s kind of just a way to like get in the word twice or if you can’t for FCA, get in the word at least once a week.
00:04:44.925 –> 00:05:06.455
I love that. So another way to connect, and that’s so smart to do it on a different, like a TuesdayThursday versus a Monday whatever. Tell me, it looks from just observing, right, my little Instagram stalking, it looks like you guys do a lot of really fun stuff. Absolutely. Tell me what are some of your favorite fun activities that you guys have done?
00:05:07.415 –> 00:05:23.030
Well, I’ll say this past Monday we did it’s called Nacho Average Monday night. So before we start everything, we have a big nacho bar. Everybody come free food. Everybody’s about free food. Eat some nachos, have some fellowship, and then we get into the word for our Bible studies.
00:05:23.270 –> 00:05:45.320
So, like, for the first three weeks of the month, we split guys and girls and then on the fourth Thursday, we all come together and like, I think the house we’re going to tonight or tomorrow night has like a pool and stuff. So, we’ll have like a pool party, eat some food together, like. All the fun stuff we really do is like about that fellowship and bringing people in. So, it’s really cool to like have that fun aspect but also connect it back to the Lord. Okay.
00:05:45.320 –> 00:05:48.200
So it’s just hanging out. Yeah. Yeah. Having a good Yeah.
00:05:48.680 –> 00:06:28.315
And one thing that’s overlooked is, like, you think, like, if you’re if you’re going to church or you’re going to something like this, it has to be, like, super spiritual and you have to be, like, really deep and, you know, everything. But a lot of times, there’s still the joy of the Lord. Like, when you walk into the room and we’re playing games and you have cornhole set up, and it’s like a lot of times what we’ve heard from testimonies from people is like it felt really welcoming because it was never something it’s something they’ve never experienced before. It’s like not only are these like athletes on fire for Jesus, but also like you telling me we can play cornhole and have fun, play spike ball and like have icebreakers and, like, all laugh together and, like, this is still, like, considered Christian fellowship? Like, yeah, absolutely.
00:06:28.315 –> 00:06:29.515
And that’s what we try to do.
00:06:29.515 –> 00:06:40.490
So breaking kind of that myth or whatever that Christianity has to be stiff and stuffy and, like, no, it’s supposed to be full of life, right? Exactly. Yeah. I love that. I love that.
00:06:40.490 –> 00:06:53.445
Yeah, it’s there for new believers and people who have been believing for a long time. Like, it doesn’t matter where you’re at in your walk or even if you haven’t committed your life to Christ, like everyone’s welcome to come.
00:06:54.085 –> 00:07:08.920
That’s a really cool message because I think maybe there are a lot of students who would hesitate because they’re kind of maybe just curious or, you know, think, well, oh, that’s not me. Yeah. But what I hear you saying is, yes, it is you.
00:07:09.160 –> 00:07:19.320
Mhmm. Yeah. And that’s the important part of, like, being welcoming and, like, being available is another big thing. It’s another one of the reasons we meet on Mondays and we meet on Thursdays. We want to be available.
00:07:20.475 –> 00:07:33.275
Yeah. And always, you know, like like I said, being available if somebody wants to come for the first time, like, hey, come with me. Like, I’ll walk in with you. Yeah. Like, whatever it may be and a lot of times, like, people avoid going to things like this.
00:07:33.275 –> 00:07:46.010
They don’t wanna go by themselves and that’s like one of the things we talk about as leaders a lot, is like whenever people walk in, make them feel welcome, make them feel like they’re supposed to be here and and they’re don’t want to be clicky, you know, stuff like that.
00:07:46.605 –> 00:08:52.165
So, is, boy, you just said a mouthful and I think a lot of churches could learn a lesson from that. Exactly. Like really, yeah. I mean, I just see a big kind of, and maybe it’s just because my Instagram feeds me what it knows I like, which I know that’s true, but you know, you see such a big movement like across the nation, maybe with FCA, and maybe one of you guys needs to say what does FCA stand for, I know, but you know, I’ll let you guys tell the audience what is FCA, but just the Christian athletes in general are really being more bold in making a statement, and it kind of started, like I remember Oklahoma, right, softball, and they were just everything the reporters would ask them after they won the national championship, it was just like pointing it back to the Lord, pointing it back, and then you look at Ohio State and just the things that have happened on that campus, and then when your Instagram sees you look at that, then it feeds you all these other campuses that really seem to be just like a big movement is happening.
00:08:52.645 –> 00:09:16.435
I’ll say kind of with that whole movement thing, it’s amazing to see, and I think it’s in the Bible, like, we’re called to go and make disciples, and so these athletes that had this bigger stage like, I know Garrett Nussmeyer, he praises the Lord a lot, like postgame and stuff like that, but any of these athletes with a bigger stage, they’re using that stage to glorify God, to show that their identity isn’t in their sport, but it’s in Christ and they’re playing this sport to glorify the Lord instead.
00:09:16.435 –> 00:09:31.610
I love that. So post Tim Tebow, right? He might have started it actually, might have not been the softball player, might have been Tim a long time ago, right? But like now we’re seeing more and more of that. So somebody tell us what FCA is.
00:09:32.970 –> 00:10:01.420
So FCA is Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and our goal is to see the world transformed by Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes. So anytime we do meetings or anything like that, we want to equip not only athletes with where they’re at, but also to bring that the love of Christ to teammates around them and maybe even influence a coach at some point as well. Same thing for coaches, equipping coaches with how to lead by example and lead by living like Christ.
00:10:01.500 –> 00:10:06.380
That’s really no, I don’t know that I’ve ever really paid attention to the coaching part of that. That’s cool.
00:10:06.620 –> 00:10:07.180
Absolutely.
00:10:07.180 –> 00:10:10.620
That’s really cool. Do a lot of our coaches join in?
00:10:11.835 –> 00:10:17.915
No, not really. Think actually that you said that we probably need to do better job of actually inviting the coaches to the huddles.
00:10:17.915 –> 00:10:19.195
I know, actually.
00:10:19.195 –> 00:10:22.715
Softball coach is really involved in his faith.
00:10:22.715 –> 00:10:23.195
Oh, yeah.
00:10:24.760 –> 00:10:55.415
I don’t and coach Barbie, but I know the volleyball coaches and there’s some other coaches that aren’t as involved. And so I think it’s a great way to get them involved by them seeing it through their athletes on how putting your faith and trust in Jesus actually makes you play better and bears fruit that is more than just a sport. And so I think some coaches can see that through their own athletes just being involved with Christ.
00:10:56.590 –> 00:10:57.470
Absolutely.
00:10:57.790 –> 00:11:39.870
I mean, right? So I guess a witness goes both ways, right? Can go anyway, like your life, how you lead and live your life matters, and it’s funny you said volleyball because I was just in the beach locker room, right, with you guys and the big poster that’s in the front locker room, I saw that that was an FCA poster, at first I thought it was like, because it looks like some of the stuff that I do, like the team building and the goal setting, but that was an FCA poster, talk about that. Like, so it sounds like y’all do a lot of really kind of good work around things that really help teams to perform better.
00:11:40.315 –> 00:12:15.085
Yeah. So, there’s a really cool guy named Mike De Maria. He is like our leader technically of like FCA on campus and so, he makes it a point to meet with each of the teams when he can. So, the last So I’m a senior, so the last three years that I’ve been here, he would come once a week into our locker room, and he would speak to us through a practical way of, you know, just anything, like emotions in sports and how to deal with it. And he wouldn’t directly say it, but, you know, a lot of it does relate back to the Bible and stuff.
00:12:15.085 –> 00:12:38.215
But he can’t technically, like, come preach to us. Right. But he would come in and he would help us with, like, mental mental stability, you know, all that kind of stuff. And so he would put up those posters for us and it would kind of just be a light and an encouragement. And so that reaches some people and it doesn’t reach others, but he always pushes it.
00:12:38.215 –> 00:12:59.250
And I feel like just when it’s in God’s timing for people to realize that it is about the Bible is when they come to realize that all this advice, you know, can be, sought out in the Bible if you go to Jesus and stuff, and so he does that. I know he goes see baseball, track, he goes once a week to each Okay,
00:12:59.810 –> 00:13:31.515
I didn’t even realize that. Knew that it was a little saw him Usually once cook for groups, but I didn’t know he did like a talk. Yeah, I know him, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet him and I’ve teased him because he’s like stole some of my information, Some of my, he said, I’m gonna use that, right? And so when I went in to work with the team this summer indoor before when they were at their camp, I was doing the pyramid and he’s like, oh, that looks a lot like mine, I’m like, wait, are you copying me again? We’re teasing each other.
00:13:31.515 –> 00:13:32.635
A three-dimensional athlete.
00:13:32.635 –> 00:13:47.410
Yeah, yeah, so, but I mean, it’s a lot of the goal setting and now that I hear Carly talking, I mean, makes a lot of sense that a lot of the things that he’s talking about are things that I also talk about from a mental health perspective. And it also makes sense that it could all connect, right?
00:13:47.410 –> 00:13:48.370
Yeah, absolutely.
00:13:48.370 –> 00:13:50.850
Yeah. Yeah. That’s cool. That’s cool.
00:13:50.850 –> 00:14:20.790
Yeah, he does a lot of, I was able to go with him because he’s also involved with, so he works for FCA. So he’s also involved with like just the area and with different high schools. I was able to go with him, over the summer, and he worked with, a high school football team, and they just did, like, team building games, probably with all those pictures were. Did, like, a bunch of team building games and stuff, and it’s like it’s like one of those things. It’s like it doesn’t have to be like over spiritualized but if you’re just like the joy of the lord is there and your teamwork, like, it is all biblical principles.
00:14:20.790 –> 00:14:24.870
It doesn’t even have to be even set and it’s like, it brings people closer together.
00:14:25.895 –> 00:14:46.490
Oh yeah, I love, that’s fun stuff. That’s fun stuff. I like that. So tell me like just a little bit, I’m gonna put everybody on the spot just because we’re wrapping up, like how have you been personally impacted, how have you grown from by your experience of being a part of this group?
00:14:50.090 –> 00:15:04.205
So I’ll say I came in as a freshman obviously. I throw the javelin on the track team. And like when I first came in, it was a lot of like me, me, me in my sport. And like I’m not performing well. I need to try this.
00:15:04.230 –> 00:15:35.040
And like, instead of getting closer to god and that, it felt like I was getting away from god and kinda like doubting his plan for me. I was like, man, I’m not succeeding. Like, I’m getting hurt like, what’s going on? And so, I’m not really like pulling towards him in that moment but in those moments when you’re at your lowest, god’s like, draw near to me and I’ll draw near to you and like that’s when he wants you there and so, being it like Mike invited me to FCA freshman year and ever since like going to FCA, joining this group, like, they’ve been able to pour into me so much and help me make that change and it’s just been like life changing.
00:15:35.360 –> 00:15:36.640
And now you’re one of the leaders.
00:15:36.640 –> 00:15:39.200
Yep. Yeah. That’s pretty cool. Yes, ma’am.
00:15:39.360 –> 00:16:20.025
I think for me, so I feel like it’s kind of a specific situation, but I didn’t know Christ before I started coming to FCA. So for me, the group impacted me by showing me what it means to serve Christ and have fellowship with other people around me that also love Jesus. And so I got a community from it. I got people, like eight best friends that we hang out every day and, like, we’re all leaders. And I never knew I could have friends that were so humble and serving and kind that just show the love and kindness of Jesus.
00:16:20.025 –> 00:16:32.680
And so it’s been a huge impact just having good people in my life. Having friends that serve me and I can serve, I think that’s the biggest impact that it’s made on my life.
00:16:33.400 –> 00:16:53.310
Yeah. I would say something similar to both of them. Actually, like a combination of both actually, like from sport and to community. I think a bigger thing for me though was community. I was I started coming my freshman year in the spring, and I hadn’t really, like, made genuine connections, like, while I was on campus.
00:16:53.310 –> 00:17:40.335
Like, I remember my whole fall semester, I really didn’t get involved with anything on campus, and I finally got involved in the spring. And then in the fall, became a leader. And just being like having true, Christian fellowship while I’m on here, like while I’m here on campus was a really big deal for me. I’m able to just do life, like relate, like we’re all going through, we’re all athletes, college athletes in in our faith, So we can relate on a lot of things and it’s a whole lot easier to go through life like with a trusted brother or sister in Christ than trying to do everything on your own. And it’s just been a a huge blessing and it’s also opened many opportunities for, you know, speaking and growing in different skills like that the Lord has blessed me, and I can speak on behalf of the leaders, like the things that he’s blessed us with.
00:17:40.335 –> 00:17:54.460
We were able to, like, step into those things, whenever we’re able to speak on a Monday night or, whatever it looks like and get involved. It also helps, it’s helped me grow my gifts, for sure.
00:17:54.460 –> 00:19:05.805
I love that. That’s so, so true. So, fun fact, you know, I was asking y’all what FCA is, I didn’t know, but actually FCA was an important, really important part of my life, it started in high school and then on into college, but absolutely I think pulled out skills in me as a speaker, as a leader that I didn’t know, on the get go, didn’t know were there, but yeah, I have a real soft spot in my heart for this group and I think what I’m hearing from what’s happening with you guys right now on campus is y’all are creating community, you’re having fun and you’re creating a safe place for people to come and to truly connect and in today’s world of kind of over connection through social media, etcetera, it’s kind of an over under connection in that where there’s no true heart intimacy kind of connection, it’s just like a lot of typing and some pseudo intimacy, it’s really beautiful to see you guys come together and create a safe community where real intimacy can happen in a healthy way.
00:19:05.805 –> 00:19:06.605
Absolutely.
00:19:06.765 –> 00:19:28.065
And that’s awesome. So before we go, I mean I think you guys also get blessed a lot, like, because there are people in the community at large, just little things happen. Recently, we were talking before the show about a concert y’all were able to go to. Oh, yeah. Why don’t you all give me a little give us a little talk about that because that’s really cool.
00:19:29.025 –> 00:19:45.660
Yeah. So we were able to go to the Mercy Me concert in New Orleans, and they were singing with Toby Mac and Matthew West, and we got lucky enough to have one of the guys in FCA and our Bible study. He plays baseball. His name is Levi Schaefer. He had text us one night after Bible study.
00:19:45.660 –> 00:19:51.340
He was like, hey, my dad’s the drummer in this band called Mercy Me. Like, we didn’t know who that was. Like, whatever.
00:19:51.580 –> 00:19:52.220
What? And
00:19:52.220 –> 00:20:10.450
he was like, having a show in New Orleans coming up. If y’all like want tickets, let me know and he’ll just send them to Will Call and we were like, oh, absolutely. So, we were able to, I think it like 18 of us or something went. Yeah. Able to like sit on the floor and see everybody and it was just like, when we got to our seats, I was like, man, this is crazy.
00:20:10.450 –> 00:20:15.010
It was just such a blessing to be able to attend something like that and worship and have fun.
00:20:15.410 –> 00:20:17.890
And treat it like VIPs and then get the backstage. Yeah,
00:20:18.130 –> 00:20:19.330
might go to a free concert.
00:20:20.295 –> 00:20:49.950
And I think there’s a blessing that also pours out from using our gifts to speak in public. We’ve had multiple opportunities to go out to schools and churches and to speak and to use our gifts and what God’s been putting on our heart. And so there was a time the very beginning of the year, we went to Amy Baptist Church. Okay. And me and one other girl, Callie, she we spoke in front of the church in front of, I don’t know, it was like a 100 youth or something.
00:20:50.675 –> 00:21:26.005
And so that was one way that we were able to, like, use our gift. And then Amy Baptist liked what we shared and wanted to bless us. And so I actually just received a check a while ago from them of $100 to go pour out back into our community. And so now I can use that to, you know, buy a box of Bibles for FCA or something that’s gonna really pour into our community, so what we give, we’re getting back blessed with, and we can use those blessings to give even more and grow God’s kingdom.
00:21:26.005 –> 00:21:41.120
That’s so great. That’s one of the things I think maybe some people, I don’t know if everybody, but some people would take for granted like, well, everybody has a Bible, but no, you don’t have to go abroad to be a missionary, right?
00:21:41.200 –> 00:21:41.840
Exactly.
00:21:42.240 –> 00:21:54.975
And there are a lot of folks that maybe have reached this age of being in college and have never had a Bible in their hands, so that’s cool that y’all could be blessed with that and be able to give that.
00:21:54.975 –> 00:21:57.295
Yeah, super humbling. Sorry, go ahead.
00:21:57.695 –> 00:22:09.150
At SCA Monday, we actually had someone bring a box of Bibles, and there was, I don’t know, I think about, like, 60 or 70 people at FCA more? How many?
00:22:09.150 –> 00:22:10.590
Like Probably about that.
00:22:10.590 –> 00:22:30.965
Yeah. Like, 70 like, 60 people at FCA. And so there was someone that came, brought a box of Bibles, and 14 people left with a Bible, and you would have never thought like, I would have have thought that 14 people needed a Bible. Yeah. And so it’s very eye opening to see that those people need Bibles.
00:22:31.300 –> 00:22:33.060
Yeah. Wow. Wow.
00:22:33.060 –> 00:22:48.665
That’s what I was gonna say. Plus, like, it’s very humbling. Like, you don’t realize how blessed you are. Like, you have a Bible, and there’s a lot of people who don’t. And then it’s like also seeing, like, if you’ve been in your walk for, like, a a long time as well, it’s like these people are eager for a Bible.
00:22:48.665 –> 00:22:56.345
And it’s like, wow, I’ve had mine for this many years and like I don’t read it as much or whatever, so it’s also super encouraging to see that.
00:22:56.585 –> 00:23:25.905
Yeah. It’s a privilege to live in a country where you can do that and where you don’t have to hide it and so we’re blessed in that way as well for the freedoms that we have. Well, I’m super happy for you guys, it’s awesome that thank you for coming and is there anything else that y’all just want our SLU community and the community at large to know about FCA or about Southeastern athletics that y’all think we didn’t touch on?
00:23:25.905 –> 00:23:28.545

00:23:28.545 –> 00:23:33.990

00:23:36.230 –> 00:23:37.510

00:23:37.510 –> 00:23:50.565
