A long-time favorite of KSLU listeners, Rock School has won numerous national awards. Show host and creator Dr. Joe Burns received the ultimate honor during the summer of 2025 as the series was selected for inclusion in the Library of Congress, archiving the show for posterity.

The show has been broadcast in 38 different states and multiple countries thanks to a deep network of affiliate stations. Distribution is through PRX and the list of affiliate stations has topped out as high as 37 stations at one time.

Burns and a host of broadcast partners, including his wife, Tammy, along with Chad Pierce, Monique Gregoire and Beth West, have never missed an episode since this nearly two-decade run began. With new content generated each week, show No. 1000 is on target for late August 2026.

Yes, that really is Ben Stein in the show intro. He’s a fan and has been on the show. There have also been interviews with rock stars like Jorma Kaukonen from Jefferson Airplane … Dennis Dunaway of Alice Cooper. He’s also the guy who wrote School’s Out … Noel Monk, the manager of Van Halen from 1978 through 1984 (The Roth Years). He was also the American Manager for the Sex Pistols.

We mentioned national awards. There have been several, including 10 Communicator Awards. The most recent of which was an Award of Excellence for the show, “I wrote an A.I. song.”
